Hollywood Cemetery

This is an effort to place headstones for the SC native sons who have none.

The Gen. States Rights Gist Camp #1451, SCV, located in West Springs, SC, intends to provide a memorial stone to honor the lives and service of these soldiers. This two-sided granite stone measures 36 x 5 x 20 inches and is engraved with the soldiers’ birth and death dates and military affiliation. The cost of the stone is to be principally underwritten by those SCV camps who claim these soldiers as ancestors, and other donors who wish to recognize these American veterans.

Manufacture, shipping and installation of the memorial stone will cost $5000. We suggest that any SCV camp which has a soldier from its county named on the stone donate a minimum of $200 to the project. This compares favorably with purchasing and installing a facsimile VA headstone, which is over $600 for each soldier. We encourage all donors to support this effort in any amount possible.

Donation checks may be sent to Robert Fowler, Adjutant, 590 Daniel Howard Dr, Woodruff, SC 29388. Please put “Hollywood” in the check memo.

We are happy to answer any questions on the project. Contact States Rights Gist Camp member Chris Rucker:

“The Charge”

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish."

Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee,
Commander General,
United Confederate Veterans,
New Orleans, Louisiana, April 25, 1906.

"If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision."

-- Major General Patrick Cleburne
